Our Premier Album of 2025: Rosalía's Masterpiece Takes the Top Spot.

At first glance, this album may look more like a difficult scholarly examination rather than a new popular music project from an artist whose previous hit was a collaboration with an international K-pop star. Split across four separate movements and sung in 13 tongues, it is a dizzying classical-tinged work investigating female mystery, religious ascent, and corporal transformation, often via the prism of various women saints. The dissolution of a romance—a theme treated with grounded honesty elsewhere—soars heavenward here, buoyed by the lush presence of a full orchestra and work from a Pulitzer-winning composer among a long list of collaborators. Its sheer daring alone renders the work of contemporary pop stars seem rather small.

Rising Above Academic Pretense

That Lux succeeds in avoid dry academic chin-stroking is nearly miraculous, and full credit belonging to the artist. While this is not her first project to alchemize historical sounds with modern styles, its stakes feel far higher here, with the balancing act far more precarious. What really elevates this fourth release, outside of its multilayered melodies, rich compositions, and engrained drama, is an essential sense of joy. Similar to the legendary artist during her peak, there is a captivating sense to Rosalía's singing that pulls you into its whirlwind. When she's tearing your heart in two, you still desire to stay alongside her through the ride.

A Signature Example of Exuberance

This exuberant spirit comes forth brightly on a stunning Italian song about a saint. It bathes in a string-drenched melancholy over more than four moments. Then, all the music falls away, to reveal we hear a spontaneous laugh followed by a declaration prior to a comically over-the-top orchestral crescendo crashes in with comedic force. The track then segues to the wild single featuring galloping strings, an imposing choir, and a cameo appearance from the artist herself.

"The charm with Lux is that you rarely exactly understand—nor wish to predict—what you will go next."

Nearly each track finishes at a totally different place from how it began. One moment examines the fleeting nature of fame with a featherlight orchestration only to disintegrating in digital cacophony. Another, a song echoing her earlier trap-infused style begins off moody and brooding, featuring prowling beats, until sudden traditional rhythms and an angelic choir arrive to soften the song's jagged corners.

The Bridge Between Art & Accessibility

A key achievement of Lux involves straddling the line between bold innovation and mainstream appeal. It is no surprise that it has achieved the artist's highest-charting work to crack the Top 5 of key charts: at its core a suite of truly catchy pop songs. One track sung entirely in the English language builds on a refrain that seems to collect more and more nagging hooks as it spins upward. This trick gets repeated on another powerful track that grows and contracts, weaving layered melodies as an intricate tapestry.

  • A dance-infused number seduces via its playful, Disney-adjacent flair and a chant-along hook.
  • Lyrically, it aligns with cultural honesty of other breakup anthems, lambasting a former lover labeled an "emotional bully".
  • Throughout the album, the singing have a sharp smile, akin to a storybook figure concealing a knife: "Top prize in acting like a scoundrel / You have won the trophy of disappointment."

An Opulent Banquet for the Soul

This album represents popular music on a maximalist level, a hungry reach for high artistry amid of impending artificial blankness. It rejects self-absorption in favor of glorious elevation, crafting a dramatic drama that masterfully controls its own built-in excess. It is an abundant source of buried gems that requires time to fully mine but doesn't feels like hard work. Where some big releases of the year seemed like a meager scraps, this record offers a lavish banquet at which the guests around the table, some tipsy on holy drink, flit between conversations about historical figures, the profound feeling of soul-shattering grief, and common stories about useless partners. In essence, it's a contemporary theatrical production from pop's most restlessly inventive visionary.
