Approximately fifty cars have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the German town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to authorities.

Automobiles, walls and postboxes were marked, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they announced in a release.

Law enforcement say they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a resident discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored substance.

The substance had been drawn in the form of a swastika, they reported.

Law enforcement then found many other marked vehicles and house walls in the nearby vicinity.

Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws banning the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.

Law enforcement report preliminary tests indicate the liquid was most likely blood from a person.

"At present there remains no indication as to where it came from; authorities are presently not aware of any harm in relation with the occurrence," they stated.

Municipal representatives stated they were attempting "to unravel the mystery" and have asked to the community for information.

A senior representative stated the attack made him stunned and required to be solved rapidly.

"This event affects the core of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the right-wing terrorist attack half a decade ago," he wrote on a platform, mentioning the death of nine victims by a assailant targeting individuals of foreign heritage in 2020.
